Radio Interview

I had an opportunity to chat to A’isha Mouneinme on Cape Town based community radio station The Voice of the Cape on Monday afternoon. We spoke about water conservation, why we should all be saving water and how each of us can do so in our homes with some water saving tips. Of course, no domestic water conservation discussion would be complete without an overview of the Water Rhapsody award [... read more]

Burst Water Mains... the apology

Yesterday Water Solutions reported on the burst water mains in Cape Town with a first hand account from me !!! Today we have a follow up from the City of Cape Town, appologising for the water outage. While we don’t appear to be taking enough pro-active steps around water conservation and getting people to do their own rainwater harvesting into water tanks, the City sure is on the ball re [... read more]

Water Main Bursts in Plumstead

Well it’s not exactly the type of water outage we’ve been discussing here on the Water Solutions website, but it sure was an interesting taste of the things to come. Picture it… you wake up on Saturday morning, ready to start the day with your usual cup of coffee and a shower. Anthony Turton, the CSIR researcher, who was gagged last year from presenting his findings on South Africa’s pending water crises said, “…do we wish to avert the water crisis now before it happens or are we to be content with the status quo, happy to deal with it after it has been thrust upon us, like the electricity crisis was?”

The Grand Opus

Using the grey water from your home to water the garden or even flush the loo has an appreciable impact on both the environment and your water bill, but collecting and using your own water through rain water harvesting, is the “big daddy” of water conservation and your insurance policy against short term water outages….

And now for water price hikes

Is our water going the same way as our Electricity ? South Africa desperately needs to spend money on our water infrastructure and the bottom line is that consumers and taxpayers are going to have foot the bill.

Who says so ?

The Water Research Commission of South Africa, that’s who. Their October 2009 report found that South Africa has 4% less water than 20 years ago….
